Preservation Architect / Designer


We're looking for an architect/designer (architectural license preferred) who is competent in all conventional aspects of architecture and preservation design and construction. Performs work requiring independent judgement in evaluation, selection, and adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Independently solves problems encountered. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex issues and supervisory approval on proposed project plans.

Three or more years of experience, architect and/or designer who exercises independent judgement in evaluation, selection, and use of standard techniques, solves problems when encountered, and receives guidance on complex projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Participate in field assignments such as conditions and measurement surveys
  • Proactive communication, collaborative problem solving, three-dimensional thinking, and self-direction
  • Stewardship planning, writing, graphic analysis, and preservation design
  • Working understanding of current and historic building and site technologies
  • Prepare analysis of existing conditions and treatment options in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
  • Participate in all stages of project development, performing conceptual analysis documentation assignments, and developing CDs elements with limited supervision
  • Participate in design review and documentation to meet State Historic Preservation Office and consulting agency requirements
  • Assist in the coordination of drawings and specifications
  • Represent the client in obtaining bids and awarding construction contracts
  • Assist in construction observation activities and the development of associated field reports, RFI responses, submittal reviews, and ASIs
  • Contribute to collaborative and effective working relationships with clients, the project team, and associated stakeholders

Business and Financial Management

  • Prepare schedules representing the delivery of contracts documents
  • Manage project finances, including manpower schedule, consulting contracts, and tracking and reporting on project progress
  • Review and approve accounts payable and receivables


  • Participate in marketing efforts, including proposal writing, direct marketing, and interviews

Education and Experience

  • Three (3) or more years of experience with architecture, preservation, or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture required. Preservation degree or certificate is preferred.
  • Licensure preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Review capability in CAD software, preferable Revit
  • 3D Modeling skills in Revit and/or Sketchup
  • Enterprise level project management and financial management software skills in a program such as Deltek Vision

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret architectural documents

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
